Intermodal- Transport

When you talk of sea freight, you must mention containers. The success story of large containers began in the second half of the 20th century and they were to revolutionize global trade. Many of the hand movements, which had been standard practice for shipping companies in the past, were dropped as a result of the standardization of containers. Both the efficiency of sea freight operations and the volumes transported across the world’s oceans increased as a result of this technical progress; it enabled companies to construct automated terminals at seaports and allowed them to satisfy the demands of a global economic system.

The uninterrupted organization of sea freight services represents a crucial element in our company’s success. This is in fact the biggest transport mode of cargo in our world today and the success of any business depends on the services of moving cargo overseas. At Poland Distribution Group, we move large volumes of goods across the oceans between Europe and Asia and Africa and the Americas. It is no doubt companies with the capabilities of sending goods overseas have a bigger profit margins and more customers than companies who don’t provide such services.

Truck transportation remains the best transport mode. Trucks can transport goods to almost any place in the world in contrast with ships, which need a connection to the sea or an inland waterway, or rail services, where the network of tracks is not as dense as roads. But it is more cost-effective to use sea-going or inland waterway vessels or railway wagons for long-distance services, bulk commodities or particularly large and heavy items. Planes are the number one exports or imports, which have to be handled particularly fast over large distances. It is our aim to plan the transport chains in such a way that the relevant strengths of the individual modes of transport are used to the best possible degree along the individual sections of the route.

Some consignments will require the use of at least two of the above mentioned transport modes. Be it sea freight and further transportation by truck to the customer’s premises or Air freight and later by truck or even by rail and later by truck.

The establishment of intermodal traffic, a variation of multi-modal transport services, where logistics chains are also organised using different means of transport, but the loading unit always remains the same, is closely linked with the success story of containers. After all, the standardization of the cargo carrier makes it easier to transship the items between the individual means of transport. The efficiency of intermodal traffic rises without having to change the loading unit and thereby increase time and costs.

Whichever transport mode is suitable for the consignment in question, we are there to ensure timely delivery of goods. We will have discussions with our customers on the best transport mode(s) possible for a particular consignment.
